An integral part of my commitment to advancing the UX Research community has been my role as a mentor to three successive cohorts of UX Research interns. This hands-on mentorship experience took place within the dynamic environment of the Research Bookmark platform, where I had the privilege of guiding and supporting aspiring UX researchers as they contributed to and honed their skills on this vibrant hub of knowledge.
In collaboration with these enthusiastic interns, we embarked on a collective journey of discovery and growth. As mentors, we explored the multifaceted landscape of UX Research, delving into its various methodologies, best practices, and real-world applications. Through one-on-one guidance, regular check-ins, and collaborative discussions, I had the opportunity to share my insights, experiences, and practical tips for navigating the intricacies of UX Research.
What made this experience truly fulfilling was witnessing the interns' progression from eager learners to confident practitioners. Together, we identified their strengths, pinpointed areas for improvement, and set tailored goals to ensure their professional development was both purposeful and impactful. As they actively contributed to the Research Bookmark platform—sharing valuable resources, engaging in thought-provoking discussions, and even embarking on their research projects—I witnessed the symbiotic exchange of knowledge that epitomizes a thriving mentorship relationship.
The mentorship extended beyond technical guidance; it was about fostering a culture of curiosity, collaboration, and continuous learning. Encouraging interns to question assumptions, experiment with novel approaches, and challenge existing paradigms became integral to our journey. By nurturing their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, I aimed to equip these budding researchers with the skills required not only to succeed in their individual projects but also to make enduring contributions to the field as a whole.
As I reflect on this mentorship experience, I'm reminded that true growth is a reciprocal process. Just as I imparted knowledge and insights, I also gained fresh perspectives, a renewed enthusiasm for the field, and the satisfaction of witnessing the seeds of curiosity blossom into a genuine passion for UX Research. The experience reinforced my belief in the power of mentorship to drive meaningful change, shaping the trajectory of both the mentees and the mentor.
I still mentor to this day and it’s a mission am passionate on continuously driving.
